Meet Monita
As a 2x beauty school dropout, I decided I would finish the third time around.
Married with a family of 7 in tow, I pressed to finish and I did. I earned a license and hit the ground running doing everything from house calls, community braid classes, wedding and runway to training at Haircolor Xperts and becoming a published stylist in ELEGANT Magazine.
I had been braiding since elementary school and styling my own hair and my family and friend's hair since middle school. With all the years of learning, trial and error and practice, I STILL had no idea how textured hair worked.
I’d only had mine for a small part of my life. As a child, I just hated my natural hair. It’s texture, it's length, the way my mom styled it, EVERYTHING. Not to mention, I was tender headed.
I asked my mom for a relaxer before I entered Kindergarten and she agreed.
I erased my texture with a DIY relaxer each time it showed up throughout middle and high school. Then at 20, I did a thing.
I BIG Chopped! Yep, I shaved my head and I had NEVER felt more... ME. As my natural texture grew, I struggled to understand it but I hung in there...until I didn’t. Then back to the relaxer I went.
I decided to transition back to natural and on the way I tried braids, units, lace fronts, twist sets, blowouts: You name it!
I ditched the online advice from people whose hair looked nothing like mine and began to take classes and well, experiment. That’s when I became the Featherweight Champion of the Curl.
I journeyed through confronting the emotional road blocks, bald spots, embarrassing salon moments, twist out fails, long wash days, product overload, shrinkage and honey, I’ve arrived.
